Old-Fashioned Baked Custard Recipe

Preheat oven to 325°F (165°C).

In a mixing bowl, whisk eggs, sugar, and salt together until well combined.Deviled eggs

Slowly whisk in the warm milk (not boiling hot, just warm to avoid scrambling the eggs).

Stir in the vanilla extract.

Pour the mixture into a greased glass baking dish or individual ramekins.

Sprinkle the top lightly with ground nutmeg.

Place the baking dish inside a larger roasting pan and pour hot water into the pan until it reaches halfway up the sides of the custard dish (this is a water bath or bain-marie).Deviled eggsBaking dishesBaking ingredients

Bake for 45–55 minutes, or until the center is just set (a knife inserted should come out clean).

Remove from the oven and water bath. Let it cool to room temperature, then refrigerate.

🍽 Serve:

Chilled or slightly warm.

Can be topped with fresh berries or whipped cream, though it’s delicious on its own.
